Merry Christmas to You and Yours

by @ 3:34 am. Filed under Sean, Spencer, Stephanie, Matthew, The Family, Holidays

Merry Christmas from our house to yours! We are in the process of uploading our pictures from Christmas Eve. We all went to mass and the children participated in the nativity play. Spencer was a shepherd, Stephanie was the Christmas star and Sean was Elizabeth’s husband Zacharias. We are so proud of their performance. After mass we came home and we enjoyed a delicious dinner thanks to Steve with mashed potatoes, salmon, asparagus and garlic bread! So yummy. We all opened our presents and spent the rest of the evening playing Matthew’s Rock Band game, a gift from Auntie June and Uncle Chuck. What a wonderful evening! More pictures to follow!

Christmas Memories

by @ 9:37 pm. Filed under Spencer, Holidays

For the next few days I would like to feature some of our pictures from Christmas past! The first year is 2003. It was pretty difficult getting pictures taken that year. Little Spencer disliked taking pictures so much. He hated the flash and he cried so much. We actually had to take these pictures twice! The first group came out just awful so we had to return for retakes. Here is one and you can click here to see a few more! (Password: families)

Have You Ever Seen This?

by @ 1:03 pm. Filed under Stephanie

A few weeks ago Stephanie went to work with Daddy in downtown. On their way to lunch they saw a curious sight. The money was part of an ink pack that exploded and these were stacks of twenty dollar bills that were abandoned by a bank robber! They found out the Bank of America on the corner of Figueroa and 7th had been robbed! These pictures were submitted to LAist.com.

Happy Halloween

by @ 11:47 pm. Filed under Holidays

Happy Disney Halloween

The kids had a wonderful Halloween. They all got to wear their costumes to school so they all woke up extra early to get dressed and ready. Sean was Obi Wan Kenobi from Star Wars and Stephanie was Dorothy from Wizard of Oz. Sean and Stephanie had a costume parade at their school and later they had class parties.

Spencer also got to wear his Spongebob costume to school. The kids got to trick-or-treat at a few local retailers then had parties and festivities at school.

When mom and dad came home we took the kids trick-or-treating in the neighborhood. This year we saw the most kids we had ever seen in the neighborhood ever! The costumes were great and the houses were decorated wonderfully!

Happy Cinco de Mayo!

by @ 12:34 am. Filed under Sean, Spencer, Stephanie, Holidays

Cinco de Mayo!

Cinco de Mayo is a date of great importance for the Mexican and Chicano communities. It marks the victory of the Mexican Army over the French at the Battle of Puebla. Although the Mexican army was eventually defeated, the “Batalla de Puebla” came to represent a symbol of Mexican unity and patriotism. With this victory, Mexico demonstrated to the world that Mexico and all of Latin America were willing to defend themselves of any foreign intervention. Especially those from imperialist states bent on world conquest.

Cinco de Mayo’s history has its roots in the French Occupation of Mexico. The French occupation took shape in the aftermath of the Mexican-American War of 1846-48. With this war, Mexico entered a period of national crisis during the 1850’s. Years of not only fighting the Americans but also a Civil War, had left Mexico devastated and bankrupt. On July 17, 1861, President Benito Juarez issued a moratorium in which all foreign debt payments would be suspended for a brief period of two years, with the promise that after this period, payments would resume.

The English, Spanish and French refused to allow president Juarez to do this, and instead decided to invade Mexico and get payments by whatever means necessary. The Spanish and English eventually withdrew, but the French refused to leave. Their intention was to create an Empire in Mexico under Napoleon III. Some have argued that the true French occupation was a response to growing American power and to the Monroe Doctrine (America for the Americans). Napoleon III believed that if the United States was allowed to prosper indescriminantly, it would eventually become a power in and of itself.

In 1862, the French army began its advance. Under General Ignacio Zaragoza, 5,000 ill-equipped Mestizo and Zapotec Indians defeated the French army in what came to be known as the “Batalla de Puebla” on the fifth of May.

In the United States, the “Batalla de Puebla” came to be known as simply “5 de Mayo” and unfortunately, many people wrongly equate it with Mexican Independence which was on September 16, 1810, nearly a fifty year difference. Over, the years Cinco de Mayo has become very commercialized and many people see this holiday as a time for fun and dance. Oddly enough, Cinco de Mayo has become more of Chicano holiday than a Mexican one. Cinco de Mayo is celebrated on a much larger scale here in the United States than it is in Mexico. People of Mexican descent in the United States celebrate this significant day by having parades, mariachi music, folklorico dancing and other types of festive activities.

Spencer’s school will be celebrating Cinco de Mayo today. Mommy bought some taquitos for the kids to enjoy. Parents are even invited to come and join in in the festivities. Mom would love to go but she is spending the morning at Sean and Stephanie’s school. There is a May Crowning of Mary at the First Friday mass. After the mass, the mothers are invited to Sean’s class for a special presentation. It’s really cute and fun. Mom got to attend the presentation when Stephanie was in kindergarten too! The kids draw a picture of their mom and write their favorite things about their mothers. School lets out at noon so mom took the opportunity to take the day off and made some doctor’s appointments. In the afternoon we will run errands in preparation for Stephanie’s First Communion.

Sean’s Special Day and Holy Day is Almost Here

by @ 10:31 am. Filed under Sean, Stephanie

Today was Sean’s special day at school. He gets to be the teacher’s special helper and he brings in the snack for the entire class. Daddy made delicious ham and turkey sandwiches for Sean and his classmates. Mommy put some carrot sticks in a plastic bag for each child too. Sean loves milk, so the beverage was regular milk and strawberry milk.

This entire week Stephanie has been attending “practice” for her first Holy Communion. Luckily, her teacher at school gave the kids no homework this week. We had portraits taken of Stephanie two weeks ago. You can see them here.

Please pray that God blesses us all on Saturday!

Stephanie and Perseverance

by @ 8:10 pm. Filed under Sean, Stephanie

Mom went to work a little late today so she could attend the award ceremony for Stephanie. This morning Stephanie received her merit award certificate for practicing the virtue of “perseverance.” Mom took several pictures at home in the morning at at the ceremony. Click here to see pictures of Stephanie’s special day!

Sean and Stephanie spent the afternoon with grandma and grandpa at home since they got out of school early! We have a busy weekend ahead preparing for Easter and Spencer’s birthday. We are also going to go buy Stephanie her First Communion dress!

Mom added one of the posts from our old blog. There were only a few posted but now they will be here and the old blog will be deleted.

Stephanie Shines Again!

by @ 5:24 pm. Filed under Sean, Stephanie

Today mom received a special note from Stephanie’s teacher. She let us know that tomorrow Stephanie would be the recipient of the “Virtue of the Month Award” for perseverance! Each month one student in every class receives a Virtue award. Wow, that’s our Steph! She also received the following wonderful glowing comments regarding her recent exams, “Stephanie continues to show great enthusiasm in completing her work. She is very active in participating in class discussions and activites.”

In the afternoon Stephanie went to her weekly art class. Sean and Dad went to baseball practice. The coach started pitching to the kids for the first time today. Dad said that Matthew really connected and hit the ball very hard! He’s a natural born sportsman! We were lucky practice was not cancelled. It was a nice sunny day with no rain!

The Chronicles of Narnia Arrives

by @ 10:28 pm. Filed under The Family

The younger kids, mom and dad watched the Chronicles of Narnia DVD all together for the first time. Dad, Matthew, Sean and Stephanie all went to the theater to see the movie on Christmas Day evening. Thanks to Dr. John who gave us movie tickets for Christmas they were all able to go together. Mom stayed home with Spencer and grandma and grandpa that night so it was great to finally see the movie all together. Matthew had to go to his Confirmation class and choir practice so he didn’t get to join us.

If you haven’t seen the movie we won’t give anything away. Let’s just say the visuals are stunning! Rent or buy this great movie if you get the chance.

A Visit from Our Primos!

by @ 11:44 pm. Filed under The Family

We were grateful that mom, Stephanie and Sean had the day off from school/work today because today we met our newest family member on Grandpa Bernal’s side, our cousin Joshua. He came by for a short visit with his mom and dad Carlos and Christina. Joshua is four months old and travelled all the way from Florida to visit with us! He has the most beautiful smile which he displayed whenever he saw his mommy or daddy’s face. What a happy baby he is! Mommy was thrilled to hold him and Sean, Stephanie and Spencer were so loving and gentle with him. We told Joshua he had to come back again soon so we could all go to Disneyland together. See pictures here.
Since Carlos and Christina had plans with other family members we were only able to meet for a short time in the afternoon. We had a yummy lunch from Baja Fresh and little Joshua surprised his daddy by grabbing his plate and sending food everywhere. Wow, what a cutie! After we visited for a while the kids, mom, Carlos and Christina all went up to Matthew’s school to pick him up. Matthew got to visit with Carlos and Christina last July when he went to Florida but mom still wanted him to see his cousins since they could only come to visit us today.

Earlier in the day mom and the kids had to run a lot of errands because we were doing last minute shopping for Sean’s Godmother’s baby shower on Saturday. Mom also picked up Easter clothes for the kids.

When Sean’s baseball practice was cancelled we decided at the last minute to go see Ice Age 2. Spencer was the one who wanted to see it the most. All the kids loved the movie. We ran into one of Sean’s classmates at the movies and we all sat together. We’ll be sure to buy this movie when it comes out on video!
